Choose the Perfect Indoor Rabbit Cage – Review

After sifting through tons of different options I settled on the four indoor rabbit cages below. I chose the four below because firstly I think they are all brilliant cages and secondly they give a nice cross section of the options available. For tips on how to choose the perfect indoor rabbit cage click here.

So without further ado….

Super Pet Habitat Defined Home for Rabbits

Pros
This indoor rabbit cage is worth every penny. It has plenty of space, two levels to allow your rabbit to explore, large top and side opening doors, is easy to clean and very durable.

Cons
The only real negative I have with this cage is the wire floor. The 1” spacing is pretty good, but I would still recommend putting a grass mat etc. on the bottom of the cage giving your rabbit a solid base to play and relax.

Verdict – 8.5/10
This is a brilliant home for any rabbit. Click here to get this cage now.

Prevue Small Animal Homes with Stand

Pros
This indoor rabbit cage is a brilliant choice and is a great size (XL cage recommended). It has plenty of room for your rabbit to explore and play. It is well built, gives your rabbit easy access in and out of the cage and is a breeze to clean.

Cons
This cage has small wire on the bottom. The spacing is small so it does provide good surface areas for your bunny to hop on. But I would definitely suggest putting a grass mat or piece of carpet down to give your bunny a solid alternative (this also goes for the cage door).

Verdict – 9/10
Fantastic size, easy to clean, large doors with easy access and well built. This is a fantastic option. Click here to get this cage now.

My Deluxe Home, Giant

Pros
This cage is a brilliant, large cage at a very reasonable price. It offers your rabbit plenty of room with two levels to explore and play. It has two large doors which give really easy access in and out of the cage.

Cons
The base of this cage is quite high (8”) and some rabbits could struggle to get in and out. I also prefer and would recommend cages that are slightly off the ground as this seems to make a rabbit feel more secure and comfortable.

Verdict – 8/10
Overall this is a very good cage at a great price. Click here to get this cage now.

Ware Manufacturing Premium+Hutch

Pros
This is a great looking hutch that sits high off the ground. I love the fact that the rabbit has two separate areas and that the nest area and ramp are solid wood and not wire. The hutch is a fantastic size (large version recommended) and easy to clean.

My favorite feature is the rabbit run add on. This option allows you to increase your rabbits play area substantially and with the easy access to and from the cage (wooden ramp), your rabbit will have more then enough space to play unsupervised in his/her very own playground.

Cons
This cage is made from soft wood and rabbits generally tend to chew, so your rabbit loves it but the hutch can get quite chewed up. The hinges and heart lock aren’t the most reliable, and could need reinforcing or replacing after a bit of time.

Verdict – 9.5/10 (with Run) and 8/10 (without Run)
This is a brilliant, well designed cage that your rabbit will love. With the Run add on your rabbit will have the freedom and space to get all the exercise they need. This Hutch is highly recommended.

Building/Modifying an Indoor Rabbit Cage

Often finding that perfect indoor rabbit cage can be pretty tricky. Trying to balance size, price, design etc. can all be a bit much and often really frustrating. But there there is always another option.

Why not build your own or modify a store bought indoor rabbit cage.

By being a bit creative and getting your ‘hands dirty’ you will be able to give your rabbit the home he/she deserves, with the added bonus of fitting your design, space limits and budget.

If you are relatively new at building and rabbit ownership, I would suggested buying a modest indoor rabbit cage and making some extensions. The article Indoor Rabbit Cage – Basic Cage Design is a good guide on how to approach building your very own indoor rabbit cage.

Good luck and I hope you have some fun.

Six Simple Tips for Choosing the Perfect Indoor Rabbit Cage

Tip 1- Size

The most important thing to consider is the size. The indoor rabbit cage has to be large enough for your rabbit. A rough guide is about 5 times the adult size of the rabbit or about 100cm per 1kg for smaller rabbit. Make sure you buy the biggest size cage possible, so you rabbit has enough space (often cages that manufactures say are suitable for rabbits are too small……….so use you own judgment).

Tip 2 – Height

The height of an indoor rabbit cage should allow the rabbit to sit up straight, without its ears touching the top. The minimum height I would recommend for your indoor rabbit cage would be 40 cm, but this only a guide. Please use you discretion and if in doubt go for the taller cage.

Tip 3 – Floor/base

The floor of your indoor rabbit cage should be solid. Try and avoid wire bottoms as there irritate rabbit’s feet and can cause injury. If you buy a wire bottom indoor rabbit cage, place something on the bottom like a towel, grass matt or several pieces of newspaper to insure the safety of your rabbits feet.

Tip 4 – Cage Door

The door in your indoor rabbit cage should be large. A side door is preferable as this gives your rabbit easy access in and out of his home. It can also be beneficial for your cage door to double as a ramp (but please stay away from wire ramps, unless you cover it as mentioned in Tip 3).

Tip 5 – Litter box

Rabbits are clean pets, and you should provide a litter box in and out of the cage. A rabbit can be trained to go to the bathroom, just like a cat and litter boxes will enable this.

Tip 6 – Freedom

Even if you buy the biggest indoor rabbit cage, you should still let you rabbit out to hop around. This will make you rabbit more comfortable with you and his surroundings give him much needed exercise and really give you the full enjoyment of owning and loving your wonderful pet.

Good luck finding the perfect home for your rabbit.
